How to choose a portable Bluetooth speaker: 7 things that matter
What makes a good portable speaker
A good portable speaker is not necessarily the biggest or the most expensive. It is the one that suits where you use it: on the beach, in a tent, on a bike, in the bathroom or on a desk. Below are the seven things that make the difference, in the order they are worth looking at.
If you are wondering which Bluetooth speaker to buy, what to look for and how many watts a speaker needs for where you will use it, the points below answer in turn.
1. Where will you use it?
Start with the place, not the specifications. For hiking, cycling or the beach you need a small, light speaker you can clip to a backpack. For a party in the garden, power and bass matter more. For the home, the office or the bathroom, a compact 5–10 W speaker is usually enough. If you know from the start where the speaker spends 80% of its time, the other choices become simple.
2. Power: how many watts do you need?
Power is measured in watts (W). As a rule of thumb: 5–10 W for a room, an office, a bathroom, a tent or a table outdoors with a few friends; 10–20 W for a terrace, a garden or a windy beach; over 20 W for parties and big spaces.
Do not chase the figure alone. The size of the driver and the shape of the body change how a speaker sounds a great deal. A driver over 50 mm in a well-sealed body gives fuller bass than a smaller one, even at the same power. And if you want louder sound without a big speaker, check whether you can pair two identical speakers in stereo (see point 6).
3. Battery life
The stated battery life is usually measured at medium volume. At full volume it drops, sometimes by half. For a whole day outdoors, look for at least 10–12 hours. Check the charging port too: USB-C is more practical, because you use the same cable as for your phone. If you are away for several days, a power bank solves the problem more cheaply than a huge speaker.
4. Water resistance: IPX4, IPX5, IPX7 or IP67?
The IP code tells you how well the speaker is protected. IPX4 handles splashes (light rain, splashes from a sink). IPX5 handles water jets: you can rinse it under a tap. IPX7 survives temporary immersion in water, down to 1 m. IP67 is the same as IPX7, plus full protection against dust and sand.
For the beach, the pool or the shower, choose at least IPX7. IP67 is the best choice if the speaker often ends up in sand or dust. Every code is explained at length in our guide on IPX4, IPX5, IP55 and IP67.
5. Size and weight
A speaker you leave at home because it is too heavy is no use at all. For a backpack and a bike, a small speaker with a strap or a hook is more useful than one with 5 W more. Check the weight and whether it has somewhere to attach it: a strap, a clip or a hook.
6. Bluetooth and useful features
Bluetooth 5.0 or newer gives you a steady connection up to about 10 metres with nothing in the way, and lower battery use. Other features that matter in practice: stereo pairing (TWS), which connects two identical speakers, one on the left channel and one on the right, so the sound becomes wider and louder; a built-in microphone, so you can take calls from the speaker; and physical buttons, easy to find even with wet hands.
7. Budget
You do not need a speaker costing hundreds of lei for music in a tent or the shower. Under 100 lei there are small, water-resistant speakers with 10 W and a day's battery that cover most situations. It is worth paying more only if you need a lot of power for big spaces.
In short: what to choose for each situation
Beach, pool, shower: water resistance matters; look for IPX7 or IP67.
Hiking, cycling: weight and attachment matter; look for a small speaker with a strap and 10–12 hours.
Room, office, bathroom: size matters; look for 5–10 W and Bluetooth 5.0 or newer.
Garden, parties: power and bass matter; look for over 20 W or two speakers in stereo.
Example: TESNA Pod mini
If you want a small speaker for outdoors, the TESNA Pod mini ticks the points above: 10 W, a 52 mm driver, IP67 water and dust resistance, up to 12 hours of music, a strap to hang it by and stereo pairing with a second Pod mini. It costs 69 lei, with delivery in 1–3 days. See every model in the portable speaker category.
